The Top 10 Reasons Hotels (and everybody else) Need Encasements On Their Beds

10.

Germs.  The average mattress contains as many as 1 billion germs per square cm.  By comparison, there are only 33,000 germs per sq cm on a toilet seat and 70,000 on a frequently used door handle.

9.

Body Fluids.  Body fluids (drool, perspiration, blood, semen, and urine) are the leading cause of mattress and pillow degradation resulting in the loss of resiliency in foam and fiber, the growth of bacteria, and the development of odors.

8.

Mold and Mildew.  Mold growth occurs anytime the mattress is exposed to moisture through humidity, spills, food or body fluid leading to mattress dilapidation, odors and ailments for guests.  Additional concerns arise due to the toxic fire retardant chemicals used in mattresses that can be released through the sheets when the mold feeds on wet mattress material.

7.

Dust Mites.  The guanine produced by dust mite droppings is the leading cause of allergies, asthma, and eczema that affects 54.3% of travelers.  The average unprotected mattress contains as many as 10 million mites and will increase 10% in weight every year from dust mite colonies and their waste.

6.

Bed Bugs.  The name “bed bugs” comes from their preferred habitat of the mattress and box spring.  Entomologists, pest control professionals and even the EPA suggest the best, front-line defense against a bed bug infestation is the use of a quality mattress and box spring encasement.  With increased media attention and on-line travel review sites, a single infestation can have devistating results on brand value and the drop in business.  The liability from bed bug lawsuits has resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars being awarded. Even settlements out of court typically range between $8,000 to $15,000 per claim.   Bed bug treatments usually require the rooms directly above and below as well as on either side of a suspected infestation to be taken out of service for up to five days resulting in treatment and loss room rental costs averaging $5,000 -$7,000 per incident.  Worse yet, bed bugs can easily be reintroduced to any hotel by hitchhiking on the clothing or suitcases of new guests.

5.

Hospitality Grade.  Most mattress encasements were developed for the consumer market and were not designed to handle industrial washing/drying temperatures.  CKI’s mattress encasements are specifically designed for hospitality use and care.

4.

Sustainability.  Replacing mattresses is a significant expense for hoteliers, yet most have to be replaced prior to warranty expirations due to staining and odors.  Employing the protection power of CKI’s superior line of mattress encasements maximizes the life of the mattress and safeguards the warranty.
